High potential and gifted education

High potential and gifted education is delivered in our schools through a combination of in-class, whole school and system level programs, practices and procedures. At St Andrews Public School, every learner’s potential is our priority. Many students have high potential, and we help that potential to grow into something powerful. Our school offers a diverse range of opportunities across the 4 domains of potential: creative, intellectual, physical and social-emotional. High potential and gifted education is delivered in-class, across the whole school and department wide.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

Our classroom practices support and extend high potential and gifted students. Our supportive classroom environments promote a sense of belonging and encourage risk-taking, creativity and collaboration. We identify students' learning needs in the classroom and use evidence-informed teaching practices to challenge and extend students. We provide learning pathways, including enrichment and extension programs.

Strategies our teachers use to support HPGE include:

  • Differentiated tasks that adjust pace, complexity and higher-order thinking.
  • Formative assessment to monitor growth and adapt learning.
  • Explicit teaching of critical thinking and problem-solving strategies.
  • Opportunities for abstraction, inquiry, and curriculum depth.
  • Tasks that promote choice, authenticity, and critical and creative thinking including cross-curricular projects.
  • Flexible grouping for collaborative ideation and presentation.
  • Differentiated movement tasks and skill refinement in PDHPE.
  • Targeted learning goals for coordination, agility, and control.
  • Opportunities to take on lead roles in physical demonstrations or team strategy.
  • Supportive learning environments that enable exploration and self-assessment.
  • Strengths-based feedback and goal setting.
  • Opportunities for leadership within the classroom.
  • Structured peer collaboration and reflection.
  • Safe learning environments that encourage confidence, risk-taking, and perseverance.

Enrichment opportunities for HPGE students at our school

Opportunity Class

The Opportunity Class (OC) program was established to provide gifted and talented students in New South Wales with an enriched educational experience. Recognising that these students often require different learning opportunities to thrive, the program aims to challenge and engage them through a curriculum tailored to their advanced capabilities.

Night of The Notables

The Night of the Notables (NotN) program was developed as a specialised independent research initiative aimed at engaging HPGE students within our Opportunity Class and Stage 3 classes. The program was designed to foster critical thinking, creativity, and research skills in a supportive environment. The primary goal of NotN is to provide students with an opportunity to explore notable figures in history through independent research. By doing so, students not only enhance their knowledge of significant contributions to society but also develop essential skills such as research methodology, effective writing, and public speaking.

Market Day

The Market Day program was developed as a specialised commerce initiative aimed at engaging HPGE students within our Opportunity Class and Year 6 classes. Students develop teamwork, research and design thinking skills to develop and produce a product to take to market. The program culminates in market where students set up stalls and sell their products to their peers.

Debating

The SAPS Debating program aims to promote critical thinking, public speaking, and teamwork among students in Stage 3. Each year SAPS participates in the Premier’s Debating Challenge by entering two teams composed of Year 5 and 6 students. Recognising that not every interested student will make the team, we have introduced weekly debating workshops open to all, including team members. These workshops provide a nurturing environment where students can hone their debating skills, learn the nuances of argumentation, and practice public speaking without the pressure of competition. This dual approach has fostered a more inclusive atmosphere and encouraged a love for debating among a broader range of students.

Public Speaking

Our public speaking program aims to provide students with structured opportunities to develop their speaking abilities. Participation in competitions such as the Premier's Multicultural Public Speaking Competition and the Regional South Operational Directorate Primary Schools Public Speaking Competition reflects our commitment to promoting a culture of excellence in communication.

Students are encouraged to participate in the Public Speaking program, where they receive comprehensive support in crafting and delivering speeches. To prepare, students learn about the key components of effective public speaking: matter (content), manner (delivery), and method (structure). They begin by presenting speeches at the class level, allowing them to practice their skills in a supportive environment. From these presentations, selected students advance to a stage final, where they compete for the chance to represent the school outside competitions.
